Curriculum

Curriculum

The general aim of St. Mary's is to create a community where each child is assisted and encouraged to develop their potential in a happy, stimulating and caring environment.

The full range of National Curriculum subjects are covered through carefully planned programmes of study. When a child starts school, teachers use a Baseline Assessment to analyse the child's ability. As they progress through school a variety of standardised tests are used to assess progress and these include SAT's in years two and six. Tests have also been included at years 3, 4 and 5. Literacy and numeracy are considered extremely important. Accordingly, emphasis is placed on these subjects within the overall framework of the National Curriculum.

Computers

In September 2004 we opened a brand new, purpose built Computer Suite, containing 30 computers and an Interactive Whiteboard. This will greatly enhance the quality of learning.

We are fortunate to have a well-equipped computer area available, situated in the open plan, central area which ajoins the KS2 classrooms. This is used to enrich the curriculum. Children use word processing packages to enhance text, as well as drawing programmes producing colour computer designed pictures. Databases are used and children access information from data they have programmed, as part of a particular theme or investigation. Logo, a logic drawing package is used and this develops problem-solving skills. Various programmes also enhance other aspects of the curriculum, particularly in maths and science.

The ICT Suite and the KS2 Shared Area

were both updated and equiped with new computers

in August 2008, the number of computers in the suite being icreaed to 35.

  Extra Curricular Activities

At St Mary's School we have a wide range of clubs and activities in which the children can participate. Many of these are after school, although some take place during the lunch period.

Sporting activities include football, rugby, netball, rounders, cricket and athletics. We have recently introduced an after school sports club for KS1 children.

Colchester United Football Club operate regular coaching sessions for different year groups during the school day and also hold a football club after school.

Musical activities include orchestra, four recorder groups and choir.

Various swimming activities have been arranged including group lessons and personal survival. We have sometimes been able to offer synchronised swimming.

In 2006 Kelvedon St Mary's was chosen as one of the schools to take part in the new Ofsted one day inspection and as a result of that was considered to be an 'Outstanding School' The report can be downloaded on the documents page.
