Illness
The school does not have any medical facilities and parents are therefore requested not to send children to school if they are unwell, or have not fully recovered from an illness. In the event of a child being taken ill whilst at school, the parent or carer will be contacted and asked to collect the child from school as soon as possible.
· A child should not return to school following sickness or diarrhoea until at least 48 hours have passed since the last incidence.
· Children who have conjunctivitis should not be at school until they have been given medication and treated for 24 hours.

Medicines

The school cannot undertake to administer medicines unless a signed letter of consent is received from the parents along with the medication. This should confirm the dosage and the time it is to be taken. The single dose should be handed over, in a sealed container, we cannot take responsibility for measuring out from a bottle of medicine. We are only able to dispense prescribed medication (not anything bought 'over the counter' ).Since we are a large school, storage and the time given over to administering medication can give us a headache. We therefore ask for your co-operation in only requesting our assistance if you are unable to administer the medication yourself, or if it is vital that is given during the school day. Back to top
Absence from School
Illness

Parents are asked to contact the school as soon as possible on the first day of absence; if the school has not been contacted by 11.00 am then we will telephone the parent/carer to find out the reason for absence. On return, the child must bring a note explaining the reason for absence, which is to be handed to the class teacher. Any unexplained absence will be recorded as unauthorised and will appear in the school records.

Holidays during Term Time.

Parents are actively encouraged to take their holidays during the school holiday periods. When family holidays fall during term time, Essex Education Department permits a maximum of two weeks holiday during term time, in any one year. Absences longer than this constitutes unauthorised absence and will be recorded as above. Holiday forms can be obtained from the school office.

Although the legitimate holiday absence is recorded as authorised (for monitoring purposes) we feel that two weeks absence during term time does represent a considerable loss of learning time. Holidays will not be authorised in May during the SAT's period. We ask for your co-operation in not requesting holidays during this month. Back to top
Pastoral Care and Discipline
The school is a community in which behaviour is based on mutual respect and consideration for others. The class teacher, who knows each child well, is responsible for the care of the children in his or her class. Particular problems will be referred to the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher.

The values, standards and attitudes of the school community are made clear to the children by example and discussion, so that they are absorbed by them and made their own. If a child displays persistent anti-social behaviour, a consultation is arranged between the parents and the teacher, so that an attempt can be made to correct the matter.
In the rare cases of serious and persistent indiscipline, County policy permits suspension and ultimately, exclusion from school.
The school has a Behaviour Policy and a Policy on the 'School's Response to Bullying' . This is an issue that is dealt with firmly and prompted when a case is reported. If you have any concerns in this matter please contact either your child's class teacher or the Headteacher. Back to top
Parent/Teacher Communication
There are parent/teacher consultations in the Autumn and Spring Terms (each year) which provide a valuable opportunity to discuss the children's progress and see their work. A full, written report, encapsulating the year's work is also sent out during the latter half of the Summer Term. This includes results of the statutory assessment at Key Stage One (7 years of age) and Key Stage Two (11 years of age). There is also an opportunity for you to see the work the children have been involved in, at the Open Evening in July, which always has the focus on a particular curricular area. Children will show you these activities and invite you to participate in some of them.
The School has a Policy on Homework, which you are welcome to ask to see at any time. Each family is asked to sign a 'Home School Child Agreement' which was made in consultation with parents. Back to top

The Virtual Learning Environment

The Virtual Learning Environment

All schools are now required by the government to have a virtual learning environment (VLE).  Our VLE is called ‘Frog’ and is hosted by the catchment secondary school for our area, Honywood, thus building a stronger relationship between the two schools.

Frog is a learning environment which can be accessed anywhere you have access to the Internet, via a username and password issued by the school. It is not visible to anyone generally browsing the World Wide Web.

Frog has been designed in conjunction with KS1 and KS2 teachers to enrich children’s learning and improve communication between the school, parents and children.  Through this environment we can encourage independent learning with media rich content and resources which can be used both at school and at home.

Eventually as well as the student area, we would like to develop teacher, parent, governor and PTFA areas, with users only having access to their designated area.

Within the student area, each class would have its own ‘virtual classroom’ containing information about the topics and subject they are currently learning, with links to various activities, games and websites. Motivating the children is made much easier through fun, interactive learning.

In the future as the VLE develops, we would for example, hope to add copies of homework tasks set, which would mean that forgetting to take the task home would not prevent the pupils completing their homework.

We envisage that the parents area will contain items such as, help on how to support your child’s learning and development, important information, copies of the ‘home school agreement’ and the children’s code of conduct, along with copies of all letters sent home by the Head and class teachers.

This will not replace our school website which contains general information about our school which can be viewed by anyone ‘surfing’ the Internet.
