Charitable Awareness at Kelvedon St Mary's

The Code of Conduct at our school states that the children need to be
safe, kind and responsible. One way in which they can uphold this code is in the way in which they help those who are less fortunate than themselves.

Throughout the year we support many charitable organisations in various ways.
We hold monetary collections at the end of our school productions and Carol Service and we participate in many fundraising days such as 'Wear it Pink Day' in aid of Breast Cancer
Research and 'Red Nose Day'
Over the last few years there have been lots of different special theme days for
Children in Need, including a World War II breakfast of Spam fritters and beans (which featured on the local news), 'Wear it big' (most of the children came to school in oversized clothes or with very a big hairstyle) and ....... then there was the year when the school hall turned into an airport departure lounge with each year group decorating their classrooms and wearing clothes from different areas of the world.
As you may have guessed on each of these days the children have a
tremendous time whilst raising lots of money for 'good causes'.

Wear it Pink 2008
Breast Cancer Campaign is daring every school in the UK to wear it pink any day in October to help beat breast cancer.
We took part on Friday 24 October and asked that everyone in the school tried their best to wear something pink. The response was amazing.
If you would like to find out more about this charity please follow the link below.

We had a great assembly when the hall was turned into a sea of pink and the children met not only a bright pink pig and the pink panther but also 'Professor Pink Pants' who was out to save the world!

There were lots of pink activities and parties around the school

The theme of this years campaign was 'SPOTS and DOTS'
The children decorated their normal school uniform with spots and there were lots of spotty accessories.
Dotty activities went on in the classrooms and a special assembly was held.
Spotty cakes were made and sold and some of the Year 6 children held a Karaoke Contest during Golden Time with the ticket proceeds going to Children in Need.
Thank you for your generous contributions and the brilliant ideas from our children; we raised £253.43

Spend a Penny in the Toilet”
and raise £1,034.00 for WaterAid
During advent St. Mary’s Church and St. Mary’s Primary School held a recycling challenge to raise money for WaterAid.
The response to the challenge was fantastic. At church the congregation recycled and tried to be environmentally aware, sponsoring themselves a few pence each time. They saved their money in recycled plastic bottles and brought these into Church throughout Advent.
At school the children also recycled bottles, kitchen waste, tins, foil etc. Some people walked instead of taking the car, turned off unnecessary lights, others ensured televisions, computers and games consoles were not left on standby. Everyone became very environmentally aware and had lots of imaginative ideas. The children brought their money into school and deposited it in our very original money box – a brand new toilet with a specially made clear Perspex lid with a slot for putting in the money – hence the motto “Spend a penny in the toilet for WaterAid”. Parents and friends who came to see our delightful nativity play “The Wriggly Nativity” also donated to the challenge. The toilet then travelled to St Mary’s Church for the Carols by Candlelight and the Church Carol Service. Everyone was quite surprised to see our “loo” sitting by the font and they very generously added to our fundraising.
A very big thank you to everyone who contributed. A grand total of £1,034.00 was collected – a phenomenal response from the people of Kelvedon. This money has been sent to WaterAid and will be used to provide clean water and sanitation to some of the world’s poorest people. If a village has a clean water supply it revolutionises the lives of those people through improved health, education and better food. 2009 will be a much brighter year for many people due to the very generous gesture from everyone in Kelvedon.

COMIC RELIEF 2009
'Do something funny for Comic Relief'

In true St Mary’s tradition we have had a fun filled day “Doing Something Funny” for Comic Relief! Each class had lots of hilarious ideas to make this day a day to remember. Activities such as making individual red nosed pizzas, red apple bobbing and pinning the red nose on the teacher were just some of the crazy ideas. We released nearly 350 red balloons in our 'Great Balloon Race' with the proceeds going to Comic Relief. We asked the children to donate 50p to dress up in red clothes ( all the staff joined in too, some of them had some really surprising items hidden away in their wardrobes!) The Year 6 children sold cakes at break time
Lots of our children came up with ideas to raise money so there were opportunities for children to take part in competitions (such as the talent show.)
Below is a link to a webpage with recipe ideas, and a link to the Comic relief website itself, giving you lots of ideas to involve the whole family.
We are also hoping to compile a “Funny Book” to sell in the future so if you have any funny stories, jokes, photos or drawings etc which we could use in the book please bring them into school so that we can get this project underway!
Thanking you for your continued support.

We held an assembly on the theme of 'laughter is the best medicine' and 'passed a smile from one person to another' The children found out about why we needed to raise money for Comic Relief and had a great time in the process.
The balloon race was a sight to be hold and the children watched as the balloons rose higher and higher.
